REWRITES by Catal SUMMARY & EIKEN is an online service for Japanese students learning English as a second language who want to improve their summary writing and test writing skills. Based on a “Write, then rewrite” model, our program provides our students with feedback from undergrads, graduates, and professionals from around the world who are trained in high-level academic writing.
In Japan, we experience a lack of teachers who are skilled enough to provide language feedback that goes beyond simple grammar and spelling corrections. We are seeking individuals who are interested in correcting and giving feedback online to our students’ written summaries of Fiction and Nonfiction books and EIKEN proficiency test prompts.
STUDENT REWRITES
The student rewrites the summary or essay based on the teacher’s feedback, then begins a new chapter or prompt.
STUDENT WRITES
The student reads a new chapter of an assigned book in class and writes a summary of the events that took place OR answers a new EIKEN prompt, then submits it to the teacher.
PROVIDE FEEDBACK
The teacher evaluates the summary/essay by making corrections, writing comments, grading the work, and leaving a message.

FAQs
How much would I be paid per evaluation?
All accepted teachers will be paid a range from JPY: ¥500〜¥1,430 OR USD: $5.00〜$14.30 per completed evaluation. The potential candidate's application will determine the level of evaluation that the teacher is able to take; generally, the higher the student's level and written submission word count, the higher the pay per evaluation.
We find that many of our applicants usually get assigned to more than one level, so their possible compensation tiers increase! Also, once teachers have been grading for a few months, they are welcome to apply to grade more levels to unlock more compensation tiers.
How will teachers outside of Japan be compensated?
Accepted candidates outside Japan who do not have a Japanese bank account will be compensated via Paypal account. After Stage 1 of the application, applicants will be designated the appropriate level(s) to grade, after which compensation tiers for each student submission are determined. Please verify your country's Paypal status here.
How is work distributed and assigned to each teacher?
We have a waiting list of student submissions that allow teachers to take samples as they come. There is a deadline matched to the student's submission; as long as the teacher is able to submit by the deadline, they are able to take as many student submissions as they'd like.
What is the range of workload/hours that your teachers are currently doing right now?
It depends on the teacher! Some teachers do around 10 evaluations a month; others manage to do 300! The amount of commitment to the platform is predominantly up to the teacher. In busy times of the year, we are grateful to teachers who are able to take more!
Is there a minimum per week that you'd need to do to stay on as a teacher?
We are currently looking for a minimum of 10 evaluations per month, but we do encourage teachers to take more if they are able. All teachers are compensated on a per-evaluation basis depending on the level of topic they are assigned after applying.
